Hunger Games Simulator Storyline 1 Part 1

Hunger Games Simulator Storyline

Game 1: Villains
Part 1

I recently found out about the Hunger Games simulator. The simulator lets you enter a number of contestants, then the results of the contest are randomly generated. It’s quite fun, and after coming across a thread on GameFAQs where someone used the simulator and wrote a story out of the generated results, I thought I would steal their idea for a writing exercise, as I would have to adlib the story based on the outcome. Without further ado, let’s begin!

If you want to see what the outcomes are as they progress, and keep track with the kills each tribute scores, select Load Season and enter the following code: UXPRE6M3

Prologue

“Citizens of Panem, I welcome you to our annual Hunger Games!” President Snow announced to both the assembled audience at the arena, as well as the viewers who be watching from home or on communal screens. “Now, I hand you over to my co-host, Alma Coin, the leader of District 13. I must admit, I’m surprised that you would accept this job, Ms Coin. I didn’t have you down for the type.”
“You may be surprised, Snow.” Coin said, with a hint of a smile playing on her lips. “Instead of nominating children from the Districts, this year’s tributes were manually selected for their ruthlessness and villainy. 36 of the cruellest tributes we could find will battle until only one remains!”
“That’s one way of keeping down the prison population, I suppose.” Snow joked, before he caught on to what Coin had said. “36 tributes? According to my notes, there are supposed to be 35.”
The question of the 36th tribute’s identity was solved before Snow could even ask it, as a group of armed guards burst into the announcer’s booth and apprehended Snow.
“What is the meaning of this treachery?!?” He spluttered in surprise.
“It’s nothing personal, I was just after your job.” Coin tutted, paying more attention to her nails than the scene she had organised. “Take him to the arena.”
“You will pay for this, mark my words!” Snow shouted as he was dragged out of the booth.
“You think so?” Coin hissed. “In that case, may the odds be ever in your favour.”

-----

The Joker knew exactly what he wanted from the Cornucopia. The weapons Harley Quinn had supplied for him could not have been more conspicuous, wrapped as they were in a large parcel smothered in green and purple wrapping paper, which was itself covered in kisses and messages for her beloved Mister J, and even a mannequin of a battered and bruised Batman. Joker eagerly tore off the wrapping paper to get at the contents, his frantic ripping drowning out the off-key rendition of Happy Birthday being played by the box.
“RPGs? Oh Harley, you shouldn’t have! Really, you shouldn’t have, I have more than enough already.” The Joker laughed at his wit, when one of the rocket launchers was snatched out of the box.
“In that case, you won’t mind if I take them instead.” Albert Wesker sneered, as he aimed his new toy at the Joker.
“Check out Neo over here. It’s not 1999 anymore!”
“Silence!” Wesker tossed the weapon aside and grabbed the Joker by his throat with one hand. “When I achieve complete global saturation, the likes of you shall be the first to go.”
The Joker was panicking. “It was supposed to be Bats who killed me, not some schlub in a trenchcoat. This isn’t funny at all!”
Attracted by the commotion, Gaston came to investigate.
“Woah now! The clown deserves pity. The poor fellow must have been driven mad by rejection, since he’s too weedy to ever win a girl’s heart, unlike me. Maybe if he ate four dozen eggs to get large.”
“Says you!” The Joker interrupted.
“He belongs in an asylum.”
“That’s what everyone says, but I keep breaking out every week! Ha ha ha!”
The Joker’s laughter proved contagious as Gaston soon joined in. Even Wesker cracked a smile despite his best attempts at resisting. The trio didn’t notice until it was too late that Akuma was sliding up behind Gaston. Gaston turned around just in time for the last thing he saw to be Akuma shouting “Die one thousand deaths!” as he poked Gaston’s pressure points, causing indescribable pain to every cell in Gaston’s body as he fell over dead.
Wesker and the Joker looked at each other, and without a word, Wesker gently put Joker down. The two charged at Akuma, clearly the more immediate threat. Unfazed, Akuma fired a Hadouken at the parcel of RPGs, setting them off and killing both his attackers in the explosion.
“Hmph. Weaklings.” Akuma moved on. He wanted to be away from the newly started fire before it got out of control.

·         Doctor Doom and Dr Facilier fight for a bag. Doctor Doom gives up and retreats.
·         Luke Atmey runs away from the Cornucopia.
·         Dingodile grabs a jar of fishing bait while Darth Vader gets fishing gear.

“If I am to stand a chance in the Arena, then I must find the most powerful tributes and ally myself with them.” President Snow mused. “I could try to figure out who the Careers are in this contest, or I could…”
Snow’s train of thought was derailed by a roar in the distance. He looked in the direction of the roar to see an enormous black mountain ahead of him. The mountain then spread its wings.
“Perfect.” Snow smiled, then made his approach. Snow kept at a safe distance as he watched the dragon Alduin. He was facing off against a teenage youth with wild white hair. The boy was not frightened of the beast towering over him, even though it could swallow him whole effortlessly.
“You are no Dovah, yet you believe you can stand before Alduin as an equal? Mortals are even more foolhardy than I thought.” Alduin taunted.
“I am no mortal, beast.” Yami Bakura snarled. “Nor am I your equal. The power of my Millenium Ring makes me your superior!”
“What insolence!” Alduin bellowed indignantly. “You will come to fear dragons!”
“I won’t, but the other tributes will.” Bakura held up a trading card depicting a twin being, half angel and half demon. “I play the spell card, Change of Heart! This shall bring you under my command!”
Alduin moved to devour Bakura as the Millenium Ring let out a flash of blinding light. Snow shielded his eyes until the glare died down. When he opened his eyes again, Alduin had stopped. He now stood before Bakura, waiting for an order. I need this boy on my side, Snow thought. He left his hiding place and made his approach.
“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Coriolanus Snow.”
“I don’t care.” Bakura growled with his arms folded.
“What if I told you that as the president of Panem, I could pardon you? That is, of course, if you are willing to work alongside me so that I may have my revenge on that treacherous Coin.”
“I don’t care.” Bakura remained unimpressed.
“Once I possess what I desire, the presidency will mean absolutely nothing to me. However, the vast resources such a position grants may be of benefit to you. That ring you wear.” Snow gestured to the ring. “It is part of a set?”
“An astute observation.” Bakura conceded. “The one who possesses all seven Millennium Items shall gain untold power.”
“Then it would be in our best interests to forge an alliance. Our working together would be mutually beneficial.” Snow extended his hand to Bakura, who shook it after initial hesitation. Alduin roared in what Snow assumed was approval.
“Excellent!” Snow slapped his hands together. “Now, who shall we target first?” Snow and Alduin headed in search of the other tributes, but Bakura held back a bit, thinking to himself.
“I am reluctant to trust the old man, but I must admit his resources could make him a powerful ally in ways the other tributes could not replicate. Besides, if he does prove to be disloyal, I should have no difficulty dealing with him.”

-----

·         Wario runs away from the Cornucopia.
·         Bellatrix Lestrange stays at the cornucopia for resources.

Day 1

·         Yami Bakura questions his sanity.
·         Sideshow Bob chases Mileena.
·         Xigbar travels to higher ground. As the member of Organization XIII with power over space, this is very easy for him.

-----

As a vampire, Dio Brando could move with impunity at night. However, during the day, the arena posed more danger to him than most, as the sunlight would be deadly to him, as well as the tributes and traps. This meant that until the sun went down, he would be restricted to the shadows. When a tribute came into his territory, he seized the opportunity. Dio leapt in front of his prey and started to summon his Stand. “ZA WARU…”
“Don’t.”
That one word stopped Dio dead in his tracks. He did not know why, but this woman commanded respect.
“You are Dio Brando. You are one of the stronger tributes, and yet you have the most crippling weakness.” Amanda Waller stated.
“How do you know about me?” Dio asked. He was growing suspicious of the woman.
“Research is very important in my line of work.” Waller answered brusquely. “I have sought you out deliberately for a proposal. I want you for my group, Task Force X. We hire wanted criminals to perform top secret operations in exchange for clemency. These missions are intended for those who have nothing to lose, and I will ensure this in time.” Waller handed Dio a uniform. “Put this on. It is a containment suit that will keep all sunlight away from you, allowing you to traverse the arena without worrying about the sunlight.”
Dio leaned back and screeched in excitement. “WRYYYYYY!”
“I shall take that as a yes.” Waller said. “But do not forget that you are mine now. If you act in a way I am unhappy with, I will want that suit back.”

-----

·         Darth Vader and Dr Facilier split up to search for resources.
·         Skeletor and Bellatrix Lestrange work together for the day.
·         President Snow makes a slingshot.
·         Doctor Doom and Doctor Nefarious split up to search for resources.
·         Dingodile discovers a river. He amuses himself using his flamethrower to boil the water.
·         Predator runs away from Jagi. Jagi insists that Predator “Say my name!” but Predator doesn’t know it.
·         Freddy Krueger searches for firewood.

-----

The fire started when Akuma killed the Joker’s trio was burning brightly around Venom. Eddie Brock could feel the symbiote desperately trying to tear itself away from him and flee, and it took all of his strength to maintain control. As he started to lose concentration, he was hauled up by a stranger and carried out of the fire. Venom was extremely surprised when his saviour turned out to be Jason Voorhees, who was showing uncharacteristic generosity. Perhaps the killer had taken him for a kindred spirit. Regardless, Venom wouldn’t look this gift horse in the mouth, instead allowing Jason to nurse him back to health.

-----

·         T1000 tries to sleep through the entire day.
·         Maleficent camouflages herself in the bushes.
·         Alduin picks flowers. Unfortunately, Alduin is too big to do this effectively, crushing entire fields under his claws.
·         Lord Shen attacks Wario, but he manages to escape.
·         Ripto stalks Needles Kane.
·         Akuma, Vizzini, Luke Atmey, Ernie the Giant Chicken, and Freeza hunt for other tributes.
·         Kefka Palazzo makes a slingshot.

-----

Sundowner was getting bored. He had been placed in this arena specifically to kill people, yet there was not a soul to be found.
“Maybe I’ll get out to contact the other Winds, and they can help me search. Monsoon would be just the guy for the job.”
Sundowner made his way to the wall circling the arena. The wall was tens of metres high, with barbed wire across the top for good measure. Fortunately, he didn’t intend to climb out. He snapped the blades forming his scissor weapon apart to cut through the wall, and brought all his strength down into a dual blow. He did cut through, but the wall was thicker than he had first thought, and to his horror, he had hacked into an electrical cable powering the arena’s television screens.
“Christ!” Sundowner exclaimed as thousands of volts of electricity coursed through his cyborg body, short-circuiting him.

-----

4 cannon shots can be heard in the distance.

Albert Wesker
District 6

Gaston
District 2

The Joker
District 3

Sundowner
District 1

-----

Night 1

·         Predator tries to sing himself to sleep.
·         Kefka Palazzo goes to sleep.

------

While exploring the T1000 found Dingodile, who still hadn’t gotten bored boiling the river. It could kill Dingodile now, but the T1000’s scanners informed it that since Dingodile utilised fire, a weakness of the T1000, the parameters for failure were unacceptably high. Another approach was recommended.
Dingodile turned around to see a familiar figure rustling out of the bushes behind him. “Dr Cortex? I didn’t know you were here.”
“I just came to see how you were doing out here. Don’t forget you’re representing me in these games. I wouldn’t like to be made the laughing stock of the evil scientist community if you fare poorly.”
“No, not at all Doc!” Dingodile stood to attention.
“Good. One more thing, keep using that fuel. I’ll be sure to supply you with more!”
“Will do!”
Dingodile went back to boiling the river as Cortex left the scene, shifting back into the T1000’s regular form upon getting out of sight. That weapon should not prove to be an obstacle for much longer.

-----

·         Sideshow Bob and Ripto tell stories about themselves to each other. Sideshow Bob’s stories involve killing Bart Simpson and/or Krusty the Clown, while Ripto’s involve killing Spyro the Dragon. They get along just fine.

-----

Freeza was scanning the arena from the skies. He wasn’t able to mask his power level, but he didn’t need to, as the other tributes seemed unable to sense energy. He saw a purple humanoid figure and flew over to investigate.
“Ah, Ginyu. I see you have come to provide me with some assistance.” Freeza said to the purple figure.
“Nyeh? Who is Ginyu?” The purple figure turned around. “I am Skeletor!”
“Oh, I apologise for disturbing you. It was a case of mistaken identity...” Freeza chuckled. However, his voice then took on a menacing tone. “…And nobody lives to tell of Freeza making a mistake!”
Freeza opened the palm of his hand to generate an energy disk, and threw it at Skeletor. Skeletor ducked under it.
“You’ll that to try harder than that to defeat me! Nyeh heh heh!”
“Give it a moment.” Freeza said, and before long, the telltale buzzing of the disc returned. Skeletor ran around the clearing with the disc in hot pursuit. Freeza played with his prey further by shooting his signature Death Beams towards Skeletor’s feet. Skeletor soon made his move. He ran up an overturned log and with a laugh of glee, leapt towards Freeza. The unimpressed Freeza used Instant Transmission to vanish momentarily, sending Skeletor careening into a nearby tree. Freeza laughed at Skeletor’s tomfoolery. How could he have ever mistaken this idiot for Captain Ginyu? However, his laughter was short-lived, as the homing disc followed Skeletor’s path – which went through where Freeza was currently floating, bisecting the galactic emperor with his own attack. As the dazed Skeletor came back to his senses and realized the lucky escape he’d just had, he had the audacity to claim “This is exactly what I meant to do! Nyeh heh heh!”

-----

The sleeping Alduin was more difficult to see at night than his size would suggest, thanks to his jet black scales, as Freddy Krueger found out by bumping into him. Fortunately, the dragon did not wake up. In fact, it barely even reacted to the impact. Freddy saw an opportunity to eliminate the largest tribute.
“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…” He sang as he entered the dragon’s dream.
Alduin was dreaming of the hold of Whiterun burnt to cinders, as dragons attacked it and Nords ran in terror. The fire was distracting to Freddy, since fire had been the cause of his death. Alduin landed before Freddy and spoke mystic words of power.
“YOL TOOR SHUL”
The dragon’s Thuum created a powerful blast of flame that consumed Freddy utterly. Freddy found himself back in the clearing, lucky to have survived. He had been foolish to underestimate Alduin, but he would not make that mistake again. Next time, he would be prepared. Part of his preparation was to gather his dream energy again. He could start by using the night as nature intended. Freddy went to sleep under Alduin’s outstretched wing.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

As the game series that single-handedly created the stealth genre, Metal Gear Solid may be a weird choice of video game franchise to get a hack-and-slash action spin-off at first glance. Despite this, the over-the-top melodramatic excess of the series ends up lending itself perfectly to the genre, guided by the capable hands of cult favourite development studio Platinum.

The first thing to address is the change in genre. Metal Gear Solid is usually very slow-paced and methodical, as Snake would need to patiently wait and observe his surroundings before making his move, with the occasional big action set-piece. As a hack-and-slash game, Metal Gear Rising reverses the formula, with the majority of the game built around battling waves of enemies. As far as comparisons to others in the genre go, Metal Gear Rising feels like the middle ground between Devil May Cry and God of War. While the former is built around defeating solo enemies or small groups as stylishly as possible, while the latter focuses on larger-than-life attacks with huge range and armies of enemies, Metal Gear Rising has mid-sized groups of varying enemy types. Having to face several types at once means the enemies are very good at covering each other’s weaknesses, keeping you on the back foot throughout. Raiden’s fighting style, therefore, is focused on precision. While battling, he can parry an enemy’s attack, leaving them open to a counterattack, giving Raiden to opportunity to weaken or kill them and move on to neutralise the next threat. He also has Blade Mode, an ability that slows down time and allows him to cut the enemies manually with a flick of the right stick. This system allows for attacks that sever particular body parts, such as an arm or leg, knock an enemy’s weapon out of their hands or break their armour, leaving them open to more fatal damage. Blade Mode is also the key to healing in battle, by using it to strike enemy weakpoints, allowing Raiden to absorb their nanomachines and repair himself. Raiden moves and fights very quickly, and you get an immense sense of power from controlling him, even early on. You’ll need that power though, as this isn’t an easy game. Flailing about wildly may be enough to dispatch basic grunts, but you’ll need more finesse to deal with the tougher, more specialised enemies, and that goes double for the bosses. The difficulty curve is very well balanced, as although the game is always challenging, it’s never unfair. This is a game that rewards skill, and you will need to get good at it to progress. Fortunately, the game mechanics are intuitive enough that you will learn naturally as you go on. Early on, you might block enemy attacks, only countering when they stop to rest. Later, you might get the occasional lucky parry from trying to land a pre-emptive strike on them. By the end, you’ll have the timing down pat and be deliberately parrying enemies, as it’s the easiest way of cutting short what could otherwise be a long and gruelling battle. There’s even a bit of variety in the form of stealth sections, a tip of the hat to the traditional gameplay of the series. Again, this takes a faster-paced, more aggressive approach, as stealth is primarily used to deal with enemies who would call for reinforcements if you are detected, or to defuse hostage situations with extreme prejudice.

The highlight of any hack-and-slash game tends to be the boss battles, and Metal Gear Rising is no exception. The bosses provide more than a match for Raiden, and each has a strategy to help even the odds in his favour, as well as a niche to make battling them a unique experience. For example, Sundowner’s battle requires Raiden to use Blade Mode to cut away his shield, but carefully does it, as reckless cutting will detonate the bombs on his shield, like a deadly game of Operation. Monsoon is the traditional Metal Gear mind screw boss, with the ability to split apart into tiny pieces and reassemble himself, which will require thinking outside the box to overcome. The final boss brings together everything you’ve learned, and you’ll need to master all of your skills to achieve victory. The bosses are where Metal Gear’s eccentricity comes to the fore, with highly theatrical stunts and philosophical posturing mid-battle. Thanks to the influence of Platinum, there’s also a bit of anime inspiration this time around in some of the sequences that choose to ignore the laws of gravity and suspension of disbelief in favour of going over the top in the name of being exaggeratedly cool, and rock songs describing the backstory, personality and motivation of each boss as the battle reaches its climax. Smartly, the most memorable boss battles are the first and last ones, allowing the game to start and end on a high note. The former serves as a big, bombastic opening sequence accompanied by the adrenaline pumping metal scream of RULES OF NATURE that sets out what you can expect from the game, as well as showing how far Raiden has come since Metal Gear Solid 2. The latter closes out by taking Metal Gear’s melodramatic wackiness as far as possible, with each new twist raising the bar higher than previously thought possible. It certainly leaves an impression.

Metal Gear Solid is known for having one of the most eccentric and convoluted plots in video games, and some players might be put off by this, feeling that they need to have played the other games to get what’s going on. Fortunately, this is not the case, as despite taking place chronologically later than the rest of the series, Rising is the start of a new storyline revolving around Raiden, and is fairly self-contained at that. There is the occasional nod to the events of Metal Gear Solids 2 and 4, but nothing that unfamiliar players cannot figure out from the context. Because of this, Metal Gear Rising acts as a good jumping on point for the series, as long as players remember that the other games play very differently from this one. Since Metal Gear loves its themes, they’re present and correct in Rising, this time exploring the acceptance or rejection of one’s past in their present circumstances, and the determination and drive to achieve your goals. If the player is interested, Raiden’s codec communication team also provide plenty of backstory from calling them frequently.

The biggest complaint that I can make is that the game is pretty short, with only 8 levels. Moreso, the pacing of the levels is odd, with about half of them around an hour long, and the other half only lasting 10 to 20 minutes. This is most noticeable with what is built up as the final level coming half way through, but when you beat it, there are three more levels which are all much shorter in comparison. Because of this, the second half of the game feels much shorter and more rushed than the first half, as if they ran out of development time and had to rush to finish the game. Having said that, it’s all worth it for the incredible final boss fight. I don’t want to spoil it, because you need to go in blind if possible for the best effect, but it is a great way to finish the game.

I can forgive the negatives because, although the game is short, it’s an absolute blast while it lasts, and hugely memorable throughout. Metal Gear Rising is a cut above.

Graphics: 9       Very detailed and fluid, the only minor nitpick is that chopped scenery will sometimes disappear while you’re looking at it.

Sound: 10        RULES OF NATURE! AND THEY RUN WHEN THE SUN COMES UP, WITH THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE, THEY RUN!

Gameplay: 8    Tough but fair. You will need skill to succeed, but that same skill is rewarded.

Lifespan: 7       Short with weird pacing, but there’s plenty to unlock, and you will want to replay even if just for fun.

Overall: An unexpected, but hugely successful genre hop. Hack-and-slash fans owe it to themselves to check this out, even if they’re not Metal Gear fans. 9/10
